Job Description

Healthcare Data Analyst

Annual salary- $65,000-$85,000

Salient Health is seeking a Healthcare Data Analyst to join our growing analytics team. This is an excellent opportunity for a detail-oriented professional with a background in healthcare reporting, operations, administration, or business intelligence who is eager to grow their career in a collaborative, mission-driven environment. The ideal candidate is comfortable working with large, complex datasets and communicating analytical findings clearly to a wide range of audiences. We value both independent contributors and strong team players. Self-direction, strong problem solving and professional communication are a must.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Gather and document business requirements for analytical and reporting requests.
  • Plan and execute data analyses.
  • Interpret data, identify trends, outliers etc., and develop data stories from the results.
  • Present findings to stakeholders through summarized data and visualizations.
  • Build reporting templates and maintain data documentation (data dictionaries, About the Data documents) covering data definitions and nuances.
  • Assist in translating client data requirements into new implementations and system enhancements, contributing alongside cross-functional teams to design, develop, test, and deliver.
  • Support clients on analytical requests, data navigation, and user training.
  • Drive continuous improvement of processes, quality, and documentation, and carry out other duties as assigned.

Education & Experience

  • B.S. in healthcare claims data/analysis, health informatics, health administration, public health, epidemiology, statistics, or related field. Master’s degree preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 2-4 years of professional data analysis experience with Medicaid, Medicare, or private insurance data.
  • Business analysis experience in requirements gathering for data and reporting projects.

Domain Knowledge

  • Healthcare industry fundamentals: payer/provider landscape and plan types (Medicare, Medicaid, Managed Care, Commercial).
  • Working knowledge of health plan operations: claims processing, membership and enrollment, provider, and benefits.
  • Familiarity with medical claims data and the claim lifecycle, including basic adjudication and 837/835 concepts (NYS Medicaid experience a plus).
  • Exposure to health data formats such as enrollment, services, lab, and pharmacy.
  • Awareness of utilization management, care coordination, quality improvement programs, and population health.

Technical & Analytical Skills

  • SQL: 2-4 years writing and troubleshooting queries against claims and operational data.
  • Advanced Excel (pivot tables, lookups) and proficiency across the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Data visualization and BI tools: building dashboards and summarized views, or a demonstrated ability to learn them quickly.
  • Trend detection and root-cause analysis; able to complete defined ad hoc analyses with guidance on scope.
  • Requirements gathering, process mapping, and clear documentation (business requirements, SOPs, analysis write-ups).
  • Attention to data quality, integrity, and consistency, with exposure to data governance practices.

Communication & Presentation Skills

  • Professional verbal and written communication with clients, colleagues, and senior stakeholders.
  • Confident presentation delivery to groups, live or via video, with polished and audience-appropriate materials.
  • Translating complex data findings into plain-language business recommendations for non-technical audiences.
  • Building and delivering client-facing reports, learning guides, and training materials.
  • Stakeholder engagement: participating in client working sessions and iterative analytical processes, with the ability to grow into lead role.
  • Client-facing experience preferred, including supporting escalations through to resolution.

Problem Solving & Collaboration

  • Demonstrated problem solving: breaks ambiguous questions into testable steps and works them through to resolution.
  • Proven success working independently — self-directed, proactive, and accountable for deliverables without close supervision.
  • Proven success within a team — collaborates across analytics, operations, and client-facing groups on shared deliverables.
  • Intellectually curious: wants to understand why the data says what it says, not just report it.
  • Strong prioritization and time management in a fast-paced environment with competing priorities.
  • Resilient and adaptable, with eagerness to develop deep expertise in Salient Health’s solutions.
